MITRE ATT&CK
An important element to any SIEM is ensuring you have coverage for all the various types of tactics and methods an attacker might use to gain access to your environment. Microsoft uses the MITRE ATT&CK framework to identity the tactics and techniques you need to provide coverage for your environment. You will see the MITRE ATT&CK tactics and techniques throughout Sentinel in places like Analytic rules and Hunting queries.
This page will allow you to see for each technique how much active coverage you have in your environment. This can help find gaps in your coverage. A tool like this is only as good as you make it. If you simply create an Analytic rule with a specified tactic or technique to "add coverage" and the table the Analytic rule is not one you are ingesting data for then you are not actually improving coverage.
If you are unfamiliar with MITRE ATT&CK framework, selecting a tile or header will gve you a brief description and a link to the MITRE ATT&CK website for more information. You can also see a list of rules that are providing coverage and any alerts they generated in the last 1 to 30 days.
Lastly, Microsoft will sometimes provide some coverage improvement recommendations within the SOC optimization page. You may see individual items in the Overview
, or you can select See all threat scenarios
for a full list of recommendations.
